First week of school after a long break

After taking the entire month of December off, it sure was hard to start again. Especially this week. Monday we celebrated my birthday. Tuesday was Sean's first day of public school.

Some of the things we did get done - we reviewed the four processes using the four gnomes I made last year. We practiced counting by twos and fives and looked at the corresponding times tables.

We read through Sita's growing word family book. I read aloud "My Secret Unicorn, Dreams Come True," by Linda Chapman. Sita has received several of these as hand-me-downs and for Christmas, and she really enjoys them. Finally I had her read aloud for ten minutes. She is doing great with her reading, but easily gets discouraged and frequently asks "Can you read now mom?" I let her know that I would be asking her to practice her reading for ten minutes each day, and that with practice it would become easier.

Later I heard her proudly tell her father about her day's reading.

In the afternoons we:

- baked several dozen chocolate chip cookies - "from scratch mom! Those are the best!"
- did some painting - red was happy and excited and having a birthday party. Blue was invited but was feeling shy. When blue finally started dancing with red, they were happy to see purple join the party too.
- took toddler Alina to the library for toddler story time and picked up some more Jan Brett books (some of our favorite!)

We also swept floors, sorted clean silverware, made puzzles, read books, played with bubbles in sinks and tubs, played with babies and puppies.

We ended our week (we school Monday - Thursdays, as I work Fridays) with haircuts for both the girls and lunch out at our favorite - Chipotle.

Not a bad first week back overall, even though there were a lot of things we didn't get to (form drawing, modeling, writing). But seeing it summarized like this sure makes me feel better.

How is everyone else doing with their lessons?

Dear Michelle, so happy to have stumbled across your blog! We have not yet started lessons again--the Christmas break has always been a time when I reflect a lot on what we've done all fall, and I'm not yet ready to jump back in from the gloriously fun and relaxed, much less structured days we've been having... Thinking of your family and wishing you all the best as Sean starts school and you start your lessons at home again. Looking forward to hearing about everything and sharing experiences :)

It's funny how I can think of someone and then suddenly hear from them. I'm glad you are enjoying your time off from lessons, and I look forward to seeing you at co-op!
